WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
‘Hypno’ comes from the Greek word ‘God of Sleep’.
This does not mean that you are asleep during hypnosis, but rather that the conscious mind is asleep while the unconscious or subconscious mind is in a state of extra alertness, able to act more powerfully upon suggestions and find the root cause of a problem or anxiety.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
However much you may consciously want to give up smoking, unhealthy foods or rid yourself of unwanted physical, mental or emotional pain, without the participation of the unconscious mind, real and permanent change is unlikely to occur. The unconscious mind has the ability to repress experiences as a form of protection for the conscious mind when we aretoo young or unable to deal with an emotion. This memory is stored deep in the unconscious and can cause stress, worry, fear or tension resulting in a variety of symptoms. Hypnosis is the doorway through which we can access the unconscious or subconscious mind, either to discover that repressed memory and heal it or to change an unwanted habit at the deepest level.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING HYPNOSIS?
During a session, you will be guided through relaxation into a trance state. Most people have experienced a trance-like state at some point in their lives though they may not call it hypnosis. Have you experienced times when you were daydreaming or, when driving, the car takes you on the old, familiar route even though you had planned to go somewhere quite different? Times when you have been absorbed in a book, film or project and have not been aware of the people around you or time passing? If so, you have experienced various forms of trance. While in trance, the hypnotherapist will make suggestions for the changes you desire directly to your unconscious mind which can be taken on effortlessly without any interference from the critical and logical conscious mind.
Contrary to popular belief, reinforced by Stage Hypnotists, your mind is not in the hands of someone else. In reality, all hypnosis is self hypnosis. The hypnotherapist guides or induces the trance-state but you are always in control.
